But I am not that considered with atheists. I don't see them as the burning problem facing civilization. Back in 2004 it looked like they might be. Certainly before 9/11 I had suspensions that they could become so.

It never really got going big enough to be that kind of problem. now they have had a genuine faction fight are kind of busted up and people are saying It's over, I doubt that they will be that kind of threat. The larger problem of scientism which transcends the atheist milieu I think is such a problem.

I think one thing I enjoyed the most about doing the book was getting away from the message board level of thought and dealing with real thinkers and real ideas.Joseph Hinman (Metacrock)https://www.blogger.com/profile/06957529748541493998noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11516215.post-68929132103835610302014-06-11T09:51:21.160-07:002014-06-11T09:51:21.160-07:00I don't think you allowed internet atheists to...I don't think you allowed internet atheists to set the agenda, tho you did have me worried for a page or two at one point. But you dealt pretty exclusively with professional and scholarly outputs and the most expert opinion AFAICT.
But I think Dave's point is more pervasive than that. He's saying that the whole structure of oppositional pov's - right / wrong, true/false, theist/atheist - is problematic. Because resistance always begets resistance - in a Taoist sort of way - so, inevitably, the debate will rage on with stronger arguments will only producing even stronger counter-arguments. And in this context (as I noticed too during my reading) a certain irony arises, in that you are approaching deep experiences of "peace" and "unity" in an argumentative sort of way. Not that it makes what you're doing invalid or unimportant. But there's still a certain irony.
Methttp://meela.yuku.comnoreply@blogger.com
