If the desired goal is unclear then the writing can meander back and forth and here and there and up and down and so forth without ever coming to an conclusions. In your current outline how many chapters do you anticipate? How many have you written?tinythinkerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17137637122776756669noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11516215.post-1113461418686712682005-04-13T23:50:00.000-07:002005-04-13T23:50:00.000-07:00yes, but I've been working on this thing for 10 ye...yes, but I've been working on this thing for 10 years. so have tons of abstracts and outlines and all that. It's just time to write the dman thing, you know? I mean this was old before my paretns got sick in 97. You know what I'm saying? the thing my parents, caring for them for three years and then my bother's mental illness, kept me from working on it for many years, it's something I've worked on and off for along time.Joseph Hinman (Metacrock)https://www.blogger.com/profile/06957529748541493998noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11516215.post-1113446657694484632005-04-13T19:44:00.000-07:002005-04-13T19:44:00.000-07:00Sure it can help. The chapters fill out the details of what is summarized in the abstract at the beginning.tinythinkerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17137637122776756669noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11516215.post-1113372467879146092005-04-12T23:07:00.000-07:002005-04-12T23:07:00.000-07:00I have an outline. I don't see that as a tool for helping me writ it.Joseph Hinman (Metacrock)https://www.blogger.com/profile/06957529748541493998noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11516215.post-1113328010962891882005-04-12T10:46:00.000-07:002005-04-12T10:46:00.000-07:00I assumed an abstract would be an integral part of...I assumed an abstract would be an integral part of any dissertation. It's not a scientific format, though there are sometimes preferred formats for particular branches of science. Do you mean to say that if you tried to publish your research or present it at a professional conference there would be no abstract to explain to the reader/audience the essential aspects of your work?

We have to have an abstract in the first part of our disseration, and it's part of a university-wide template. I understand that prior to becoming a doctoral candidate there is a longer summary produced for the dissertation committee, the overview document, but I've never heard of not needing an abstract at all. Huh.tinythinkerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17137637122776756669noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11516215.post-1113315948800685622005-04-12T07:25:00.000-07:002005-04-12T07:25:00.000-07:00I dont' have an abstract. This is liberal arts. Its formt the old version that wasn't enough like a proposal I think the new version is more like it, when they accept it I'll put it up. I can send you the whole entire old version if you are interested. But I entedn to put it on Doxa soon.

The upshot is really that I porve that our modern undestanding what rules out reveltaiton as epistemic authority and grounds authority in demonstration is not the result of finding that revelation was wrong or that it held back scinece, but actually grows out of a desire (of the lats) to prove revelation.Joseph Hinman (Metacrock)https://www.blogger.com/profile/06957529748541493998noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11516215.post-1112905170720313112005-04-07T13:19:00.000-07:002005-04-07T13:19:00.000-07:00Do you have an Abstract?I know you said this is pa...Do you have an Abstract?

I know you said this is part of a summary, but what about an abstract? The problem, theoretical foundation, methological approach, results (or even anticipated results), and (if appropriate) conclusion?

Assume you are talking to someone, like me, who has ZERO background in your field. What is the overall point (big picture) of your work and what are the specific points of your particular contribution to this big picture? If you had to make a bullet point list of your hypotheses or results/conclusion, what would it look like? Now, try thinking about how you would explain those bullet points (what they mean and why they matter) to someone who is not a historian or Biblical scholar.

Have you submitted chapters to your thesis advisor yet?tinythinkerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17137637122776756669noreply@blogger.com
